Creative Raw Edged Collage

Below is the blurb for the class:

You will learn to look at fabrics and colour in totally new ways to create images to suit your textile works or quilts. Raw edge collage is a technique that can be developed almost spontaneously out of the love of the fabrics themselves and don’t we love those fabrics? You will create a small wall hanging approximately A3 size. Some of the techniques covered in this workshop will be basic design, raw edge applique, free machine stitching/quilting and finishing techniques that will be required for your special raw edge collage work. Students will work on individual themes and therefore all finished work will be individual. A fun workshop.

This workshop was held at the Australian Quilt Convention in April this year. It is a class that I regularly teach throughout Australia.

The students in the class

Jeannie Henry - finished work

work in progress - Roslyn Grierson

Lynette Linden work in progress

Creating New Fabric

This is class that I taught  at the Australian Quilt Convention , Melbourne recently.

Have you ever wanted to create your very own original fabric? If so this workshop is for you! You will create new fabrics with fusing techniques to use for backgrounds and the motifs. This is a very creative approach that will enhance your art quilts or textile works. Each person will end up with a small individual piece of work. Your work will be approximately A3 size. You will explore and learn this new technique of creating new fabric, free machine embroidery and discussion will occur about design layouts and the use of colour to create your very own unique piece of work. Come and join me in this exciting workshop.

I will be running another workshop in the future in Adelaide so if you are interested let me  know suzannegummow@bigpond.com

“India Surprise”

by Suzanne Gummow

This quote by Victoria Alexander sums up what I feel like when wandering through India. “India is a place that first of all shocks, then surprises and seduces.  Colour is everywhere – a stroll down the street can feel like being inside a kaleidoscope. It’s a joyful feeling.”

This piece was created for the "Wanderings" exhibition by the FAN (Fibre Artists Network) members - a show of over 60 very diverse pieces held here in Adelaide at Gallery M, Marion.

Gazanias'

Gazanias' are a genus flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, native of South Africa and brought to Australia by immigrants on their journey to this land. They produce large daisy-like composite flowers in brilliant shades of yellow and orange, and sometimes pinks. I have these growing in my garden and when a challenge came up I decided to use these flowers in my composition. First of all I did loads of drawings. As the challenge has not been selected yet I will only show you some of the details. The technique I am using is Raw Edge Applique a class that I will be teaching in April at AQC - Australian Quilt Convention, Melbourne (aqc.com.au)

Below is the descriptor of the class and some photos of my work. In the class on the first day you will create the background striped fabric and on the second day create the motifs - these are special unique techniques that I have developed for the class.

A Matter of Time - Selected Exhibition

I was extremely thrilled to be selected into this exhibition. I love a challenge and this was - the theme I found difficult and had to consider carefully, research and think this over for a long time. I find that I work extremely well when faced with a challenge to create something new to 'fit' the theme. So take a look at the website and follow the 32 artists that got into the show. www.amatteroftimetextiles.com/‎

Artist statement:
"Black holes are so massive that they severely warp the fabric of spacetime, the three spatial dimensions and time combined in a four-dimensional continuum. For this reason, an observer inside a black hole experiences the passage of time much differently than an outside observer."
