Lest We Forget - 100 Years, 100 Quilts

Below is my entry "Red Poppy" into this exhibition

Lest We Forget: What Does This Mean to You?

Specially created for AQC in 2015 is this display of small challenge quilts, commemorating one of Australia’s most defining times and in tribute to all those affected by conflicts over the years.

For the ‘Lest We Forget Quilt Challenge – 100 Years, 100 Quilts’ quiltmakers from across Australia and New Zealand were invited to contribute to this exhibition of mini-quilts. The quilts they have created will now be hung together as a mosaic, premiering at AQC and then touring at the Craft & Quilt Fairs.

Many quiltmakers have added a dedication to the reverse of their quilt, and the stories behind each piece are touching and heartfelt.

Detail of "Red Poppy"

During the First World War, red poppies were among the first plants to spring up in the devastated battlefields of northern France and Belgium. In soldiers' folklore, the vivid red of the poppy came from the blood of their comrades soaking the ground. The poppy soon became widely accepted throughout the allied nations as the flower of remembrance to be worn on Armistice Day. The Australian Returned Soldiers first sold poppies for Armistice Day in 1921.

Ice Dyeing

Below are some photos of one of my students dyeing fabric using the ice texhinque. Her name is Janine Clark and she is studying under the Visual Arts Certificate 4 - Textiles course at Marden Senior College in Adelaide. It was fasinating to watch her all masked up and the results were very interesting. The results are very different to other dye techniques and this was her first attempt - wonder what she will do with the next lot?

The Geltwood Festival Opening

The Geltwood Festival will be officially opened by Wattle Range Council Mayor, Peter Gandolfi and will feature a guest speaker. This is me, Suzanne Gummow.

In conjunction with the opening, attendees will be provided with an exclusive first look at "SAlt The Fabric Trail, Journeys of Five Textile Artists" exhibition in the Millicent Gallery.

The Millicent Gallery, Civic & Arts Centre

The exhibition is a collection of fabric artworks that explore elements of the theme 'journeys' and encompasses various fabric techniques and ideas through contemporary and traditional media.  A group of five textile artists, from emerging to established practitioners, joined to explore, experiment and to challenge themselves to collaborate, critique, affirm and help consolidate individual modes of expression.

It was a great night - loads of people and much interest in the exhibition - it is a beautiful gallery indeed.
